How to improvise on Jazz with an Alto Sax or a Soprano Sax

I play both Alto and Soprano, and I play pretty decently, but I have no clue what to play in my jazz band. There are blank spaces with B flat or something like that on top of each bar. How do you play these?

The “Bb whatever” represents a “chord”. or “chord change”
These define the harmonic content of what’s going on in the song in that measure, to denote to you,what notes to play.
So the chord changes represents the harmony of the song.

The chord is going to be shown first by the note.. i.e. Bb
and then it may have some other “stuff” behind, which explains how the chord is constructed… ie. Bb7 , Bbm7, Bb dim Bb7b9 etc..
The “stuff” behind the note tells you whether the chord is major or minor or other attributes it may have that are important for you to know, in order to play the “correct” notes when you are improvising.
Here’s and example.. C7 chord. On the piano this chord is played by playing these 4 notes at the same time.. C, E, G, Bb Those 4 notes create the chord. Within that chord, there is also a scale, that gives you more notes to use, that sounds good. At the same time, there are other notes, that aren’t in the scale, that don’t sound as good in relation to the notes in the chord that are being played, and should be avoided or at least not emphasized.

Improvising, in and of itself, can be defined this way..
The player inventing/playing melodies on the spot, by using notes that fit into the harmonic context of the the piece (the chord changes) using many different stylistic, and rhythmic devices within those melodies.

So in essence, you are just making up melodies that fit into those chord changes. But you first need to understand the chords and what they represent and the appropriate scales that apply over those chords.
